Who We Are

Burnside Pet Retreat was founded by Ruth & Wayne Gray, passionate and dedicated veterinary professionals each with over 35 years of experience with dogs and cats. We wanted to create a safe and comfortable space for pets while their families are away. Our love for animals and commitment to their well-being drives us to provide the best care possible for your four-legged family members. Kerry, our kennel manager, has been working in boarding kennels for 22 years, she and her team also bring with them a wealth of experience.

Pre-clinical EMS and work experience

If you are a vet student needing some experience with dogs and cats, or a school pupil who wants to become a veterinary professional, we encourage you to get involved with Burnside Pet Retreat. We offer EMS and work experience opportunities at weekends and in the school and university holidays where you can work alongside our experienced team helping us provide the best possible care for our four legged guests, learning as you go.

Please be aware though that working with us involves being outside in all weathers (rain, wind, ice, snow and sunshine), getting covered in muddy footprints, lots of picking up of poo (as we do that as we go on every walk), cleaning kennels between boarders, feeding and accompanying our boarders in the secure paddocks several times a day, as well as cleaning out cat litter trays and giving our feline guests lots of love and attention.

Accommodation may also be available. Click here to enquire about our EMS and work experience program, as well as getting Ruth (a vet with 37 years experience) as a mentor to help and advise you with your university application or your future career.
